In 1977, Lebanese entrepreneur and culinary pioneer Antoinette Ramy, known to Jordanians as “Um Khalil”, opened her restaurant in the historical Jordanian city of Jerash, just 40 KM north of Amman. To date, it is renowned as one of the prime go-to venues in Jordan, especially when it comes to tourists looking to sample the unique Levantine flavor, second to none.
The landmark restaurant, named Um Khalil, is strategically located near the ancient monuments of the old city of Jerash, which is frequented by countless visitors from around the globe, every year. In fact, the old city is internationally acknowledged as one of the best-preserved province cities of the Roman Empire. Its pillars and monuments stand witness to the glory that once was one of the great Decapolis.
One of the oldest restaurants in all of Jordan, Lebanese Um Khalil has become a centerpiece of local and international tourism in Jordan. Jordanians and foreigners come from all over to indulge in the wide range of mouthwatering delicacies at Lebanese Um Khalil, served with exceptional quality and a zest of Arab hospitality.
Lebanese Um Khalil has attracted many eminent, famous and historical figures from all nations of the world. Chief among which were His Majesty King of Jordan, the late King Hussein, Their Majesties King Abdullah II and Queen Rania, and the late Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa.
Royals and international figures from all wakes of live visited Lebanese Um Khalil, such as her Majesty the Queen of Holland and former Secretary-General of the United Nations Mr. Kofi Annan. Not to mention many celebrities over the decades, including but not limited to the famous Mr. Bean.
